On December 3, 1928, exactly days after reopening, the New Joy Theatre was partially damaged by a fire. The fire happened during a showing of the Cecil B. DeMille smash “The King Of Kings” when one of the two Simplex projectors caught fire, which completely destroyed the entire projection room, both projectors, and the movie (alongside snipes and trailers). Despite no stampede, everybody escaped the theater safely without a single panic. The theater reopened shortly right afterward.
