Lister's Opera House

Built prior to 1894, Lister’s Opera House occupied the upper floors of a commercial building a block west of Newton’s Courthouse Square. It served primarily as a venue for live performances, but the 1914 edition of Gus Hill’s theatrical directory indicated that at that time it was presenting both road shows and moving pictures. It was never listed in Film Daily’s Year Books, but the building was still standing at least as late as 1927, and the Lister family was still presenting theatrical events in Newton and other Iowa towns in the late-1920’s. The site of the Opera House is now occupied by a parking lot.
