The Paramount Theatre was a downtown movie house competing with the Fairy Theatre in the late -1920’s and early sound era. The Paramount Theatre carried the Paramount Films contract allowing it easy programming in the “block booking” era of cinema. It shows how aggressively Paramount signed deals in the Heart of Illinois. Just miles away, it had locked up the Henry Theatre in Henry and in a dozen other theatres in rural Illinois.
The venue opened in 1928 was operated by Joe Marchesi of the Marchesi Bros. which had a number of area theatres. It suffered fire damage on May 9, 1928 just months after opening. It was insured and that likely helped Marchesi equip the venue with Vitagraph sound-on-disc sound to not only compete but beat the competition in town and in nearby Henry.
But the Paramount scuffled in the early part of the Great Depression ceasing operations in 1931.
