Located in the southern part of the City Centre in the Northcote Point area, opposite the Post Office. The Grand Theatre was opened in 1914. It had a long, narrow auditorium. In 1930 it was renamed London Theatre, screening British films. That policy was not a success and lasted only eight weeks and it became a newsreel theatre, followed by use as a double feature house.
It was taken over by Amalgamated Theatres Ltd. and was given a major renovation in 1939, reopening as the Oxford Theatre. It was the first theatre in New Zealand to screen 3D films and in the mid-1950’s it became an art house. It ended its days as a double feature house, becoming rundown and reached'fleapit' status. The Oxford Theatre was closed in 1967 with Annette Bryant in “The Reluctant Nudist”(aka “Sandy, the Reluctant Nature Girl”) & “Sexy World by Night”. It was demolished in 1972 and the site today is open grassland.
