where are the blue screen tabs???????
I visited this cinema today.
What an improvement!
Large screens excellent raked seating
Good sightlines and curved scope screens in at least 3 of the auditoriums.
This cinema has been upgraded to a Luxe.
The foyer has been redecorated in it’s original colour scheme and the 1930s light fittings have been reinstated.
The mini Cinema in the former restaurant area has been removed and is now a welcoming lounge space. The remaining seven screens have all been fully refurbished and the exterior of the building is much improved.
Currently showing Tenet in most screens.
And another fine city cinema bites the dust because of development greed.
I hope Everyman show an interest in buying the cinema.
Terry you are spot on. AMC have sucked the glamour out of the auditorium. The lighting is abysmal and it is devoid of much character.
I was not impressed!
Well Ken lets hope the screen tabs are reinstated and they improve the auditorium lighting
I agree with all the above comments regarding what was a fine Art Deco cinema prior to 1967. Then the rot set in. The 1998 renovation attempted to restore some of the lost glamour but now this black hole is a typical AMC concession led cinema.
They should have had the courage to restore this cathedral of the movies along the lines of Everyman Muswell Hill.
Screen 1 of Picturehouse Central has magnificent screen tabs. The Vue Leicester Square still has golden tabs in Screens 5 and 7
Well if that is the case it is very disappointing.
The main auditorium is now a huge black hole and not at all welcoming.
The film was Carousel and the process was CinemaScope 55
The Rex tabs look stunning I will post photos on The Tex page
It is just possible that because the builders are returning in January that the tabs have not been installed yet.
The Rex has now reopened after a fantastic refurbishment.
2 screens and very luxurious.
Pictures to follow
the article suggests that the original screen tabs from 1937 have been replicated….heres hoping !!
This cinema should be listed as renovating now.
Work in progress to refurbish the circle screen and build a second screen in the former dance hall
This cinema is finally reopening!
It is being refurbished and will be a twin screen boutique cinema
It will be operated by the Mundin family who also refurbished the Savoy
I have contacted Everyman Cinemas who have expressed interest in reopening the cinema and are contacting the owners.
I hope the Rex is reopened as a cinema.
the circle is still intact…not sure about the state of the original stalls or stage. It would make a great community arts centre.
the main problem in Screen1 is the sightlines. With the balcony extended forward the screen had to be raised from its original position. Having read the plans it would appear that the new screen will be fixed in front of the original and backlit to enhance the original proscenium
This is a great cinema. Screen 1 has Dolby Atmos sound and 4k projection as well as screen tabs.
All screens are well designed with very comfortable seating and excellent sight lines.
the York Press has just published details of the planning application. The main auditorium is to have a new floating screen in front of the proscenium which I think would be a shame.
this fully refurbished cinema opens two new screens this Friday in the rear balcony section, bringing the total to five
Reopens next week..look forward to seeing the changes!
Dunkirk to be presented in 70mm here later this month
