‘The Sound Of Music’ opened at the Odeon Sheffield on Sunday 3rd October 1965 and ran until February 1967. ‘Khartoum’ immediately replaced it.Other films shown on a Road Show basis after ‘Sound Of Music’ to those already mentioned by Chriso were ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’, ‘Doctor Dolittle’, ‘Custer of the West’,and ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’. Two TODD AO films were also brought back for one week runs – ‘Oklahoma!’ and ‘South Pacific’. The support with ‘Oklahoma!’ was ‘The Miracle Of TODD AO’.

The ABC Doncaster was indeed a fabulous cinema (as a single unit) inside but the outside must be one of the plainest and ugliest ever built. Saw ‘Doctor Zhivago'there on the first Saturday after it opened (May 18th 1967) and it was an excellent 70mm auditorium.
Little did I know then that 18 years later I would be the Manager there. By then of course it had three screens.

Spent three very happy years at the ABC Huddersfield from 1972 to 1975 when I was Assistant Manager there. In 1971 it was still a single cinema when I went there and we still had the two local Amateur Operatic Societies present their shows there, plus a few one night stands eg. The New Seekers, Charlie Williams, George Hamilton IV. During the twinning and Painted Wagon conversion, the cinema opened in the evenings only, using the old circle which on completion became ABC 1 using the original screen. Unfortunately, no access was made to the old front stalls (as Rank did with their Gaumont in Doncaster) so no more stage shows were possible

This was my first Assistant Managers post at the ABC Barnsley in 1971 when Arthur Seddon was the Manager. When the ABC Barnsley closed, Arthur who had been the Barnsley manager for many years, moved to the ABC Hull.

The Roxy next door to the Fiesta Club (Now Odeon Cinemas) was originaly opened as The Top Rank Suite in the mid 1960’s so was a dance hall, not a night club. Rank took over the running of the Fiesta Club before it closed. Eventually, they converted it into Cinemas, retaining the Fiesta name at first, then changing it to Odeon when the new Cross Burgess Street Odeon twins were to close.
The original Sheffield Odeon building (Bingo since 1971) is situated next door to the Roxy, which by the way is now the Sheffield Carling Academy.
