The Super 19 was closed due to the construction of Interstate 90 which was built on the right of the Drive-In. The owner decided not to move the drive-in and just permanently close the theater down in 1959. The land later became a Howard Johnson’s and a trailer park. Now the land has many restaurants and a Walmart Supercenter built where the trailer park once was.
The Erie Movie House is owned by local owners who are both husband and wife, this theater is also used for small concerts at times and party rentals. The name of the theater was previously called Popcorn and a Movie which became Erie Movie House in 2014 after the couple purchased it.
I have a lot of friends who work at this theater and they all tell me it’s only busy during Friday nights or Saturdays, it’s kinda sad since this is the only actual movie theater left in Erie.
The Showplace is no longer used as a movie theater, it has been since converted into an event center under the name “Showplace Event Center”. It is now used for parties, weddings or any other types of events.
The theatre is still sitting abandoned as of 2022, the inside is crumbling really bad and I believe water has gotten inside since it smelled pretty moldy from the outside, very sad and I hope someone gives the building some love before it’s too late.
