Playhouse Cinema

In the Midlothian town of Dalkeith, to the south-east of Edinburgh. The Palace Cinema opened in March 1938. It was soon taken over by Scott’s Empires Ltd., of Inverness, a subsidiary of the Caledonian Associated Cinemas Ltd. chain and re-named Playhouse Cinema.

By the time of the 1980 Cinema Directory published by the Cinema Theatre Association, the Playhouse was fully owned by Caledonian Associated Cinemas Ltd. Seating capacity had reduced slightly to 978.

It is believed the cinema closed in the early-1980’s and by the mid-1980’s had been converted into a bingo club.

By the time I visited, in March 2006, the building was home to the Corner Pocket Snooker Club, which use continues to date (December 2015). It stands right alongside the former Pavilion Cinema (now Carlton Bingo).

In September 2022 a consultation was being put forward by Midlothian Council to regenerate the town centre and maybe bring back a cinema to the town by using the former Playhouse Cinema.
