Pavilion Cinema

In the Midlothian town of Dalkeith, to the south east of Edinburgh. Wilson’s Electric Pictures opened around 1915 and was operated by F.& W. Wilson. Seating was provided for 800.

Later the proprietor and manager was William H. Albin. “Pictures and Variety” were advertised, utilising a stage that was 26ft by 15ft and its three dressing rooms. It was equipped with a British Acoustic(BA) sound system in 1930, and around 1931 it was remodelled both externally and internally.

By the 1940 (and 1953) editions, ownership had transferred to Scott’s Empires Ltd., Inverness, a subsidiary of Caledonian Associated Cinemas Ltd. chain. In 1940 the seating capacity was given as 900; by 1953 this had reduced to 833.

Scott’s Empires Ltd. were still the operators in 1966 and the Pavilion Cinema was closed 1970/1971. By the time I visited, in March 2006, the building was home to Carlton Bingo, which continues to date (December 2015). The building is right alongside the former Playhouse Cinema (now the Corner Pocket Snooker Hall).
