Opened as the New Galway Cinema Theatre, a former skating rink converted to show films. It opened on Easter Monday 8th April 1912 with “The Cowboy’s Revenge”, and was screening moving pictures two days later. It was originally owned by the Galway Cinema Ltd. and managed by Phil Mace. Seating was provided on upholstered tip-up elbow chairs and it was fully equipped to present the best class of entertainments. It was subsequently known as the Gaiety Cinema from 1917 and the Empire Cinema from 1919, managed by Walter McNally, but was changed back to a skating rink in 1937.
