Coliseum Film Theatre

Located in Portlaoise, County Laois. The first film to be shown at the Coliseum Cinema was “Captain Blood” starring Errol Flynn on 18th September 1936. The stage was large and allowed for entertainments such as the Black Jetsers minstrels show in the 1950’s, but these were far and few between by the 1970’s when the group Fruupp appeared here in 1974. By this time it had become the Coliseum Film Theatre. In 1953 over a dozen women became sick as a result of gas poisoning and in 1985 a malicious fire was started on the premises. It did reopen however as a twin-screen cinema two years later. The last film to be screened at the Coliseum Film Theatre was “Road Trip” on 30th November 2000.

The premises were later occupied by Xtra-vision who refaced the building but this was one of the branches closed in the cull of the company stores announced in late-2015.
