Located in the Near North Side neighborhood on N. Clark Street near W. Chicago Avenue, the Royal Theater was in operation from at least 1910. It is listed in an advertisement for Mutual Films in the Chicago Tribune in December 1913. The Royal Theater was still open in 1920; a small story in the December 25th Exhibitors Herald of that year mentions a weight lifting competition held there where a half-ton weight fell through the stage and became embedded in the basement floor.

By 1925 a shoe store was in operation at the address, and in the 1930’s and 1940’s, a pawn shop was in business here. In recent years, the building has housed a number of restaurants, but is vacant as of late-2017.

This photo purports to be the Royal Theatre in Chicago ca. 1904, but the copyright date on the photo itself is 1910. The copyright was held by the Decorators Supply Co., an outfit founded in 1883 and still in business today, with a web site.
