In Montrose, Angus, on 12th January 1911, a “hall” in Mill Street was granted a Cinematograph Licence by the local magistrates. This was operated by James Davidson, the manager of the Skating Rink and Palace Company: the company name, and the fact that the cinema could accommodate 1,000 patrons, indicate that this was quite possibly a conversion of a skating rink.

That seating capacity has been taken from The Bioscope Annual and Trades Directory for 1915, which also lists “Pictures and variety”.

On 19th January 1922 trade newspaper Kine Weekly reported that the Picture Palace, which had closed during the war, was to be re-opened “shortly”.

This appears not to have happened. Certainly, the Picture Palace was not listed in the 1923 - or later - Kinematograph Year Books.

It is assumed the building has been demolished.
