The Los Angeles Times, July 15, 1923, reported a moving-picture theater with dance hall was to be built in Home Gardens on California Street at Duane Way. Built by the Home Gardens Amusement Association at a cost of $6,000, the two-story building would have dimensions of 49x110 feet.

The Garden Theater first showed up in editions of Film Daily Year Book 1926-30, listed under the city of Home Gardens.

Home Gardens was annexed into South Gate in 1927 and the Garden Theater remained under Home Gardens in Film Daily Year Book. In 1931 FDYB listed the Garden Theater under the city South Gate with 386 seats and renamed South Gate Theater it was listed in FDYB 1932 through 1941 with 386 seats.

The South Gate Theater dropped out of the Los Angeles Times Independent Theatres listing after December 19, 1939.
