Avalon Theatre Restoration Wins 2 Awards
KENSINGTON, MD — GTM Architects has announced that the firm has won two awards for its restoration work on Washington, D.C.’s Avalon Theatre. The awards, the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation in the category of community involvement and the Pro Bono Design Award from the Washington Architectural Foundation, were given for the firm’s work on the Avalon’s facade and lobby areas, and improving the theater’s ADA compliance.

Robins Theater Redevelopment Plans Move Forward
WARREN, OH — According to the Vindicator, the City of Warren has received a $50,000 state grant to cover preliminary design work and cost estimates for a redevelopment of the Robins Theater. The theater, described as “the largest and only surviving movie house within the city of Warren and is a contributing structure in the Warren Commercial National Historic District”, has been closed since the 1970s.

Chicago’s Gateway Theatre Hosts the Polish Film Festival
CHICAGO, IL — The 15th annual Polish Film Festival in America, the world’s largest Polish film event, is currently taking place in Chicago, and running from November 1-16. The three venues hosting the event are the Gateway Theatre, at the Copernicus Center (5216 W. Lawrence Ave.), the Gallery Theatre (1112 N. Milwaukee Ave.) and the Beverly Arts Center (2407 W. 111th St.). The award-winning film festival also will be hosting satellite screenings in cities such as Los Angeles, Seattle, Minneapolis and Boston. The opening gala on November 1st at the Gateway featured the U.S. premiere of the Acadamy Award-nominated director Jerzy Hoffman’s “When the Sun Was God”.

Monterey City Council Considers Plans for State Theatre
MONTEREY, CA — A Minneapolis-based consulting firm is recommending that the City of Montery move ahead with plans to purchase and restore the State Theatre, according to in article in the Monterey Herald.

Chicago’s Music Box Theatre to Get New Management
CHICAGO, IL — According to the Chicago Tribune, the Music Box, one of Chicago’s best-loved art house theaters, will soon be under the management of its current owner, lawyer William Schopf. The miniature movie palace is currently managed by Chris Carlo and Robert Chaney, who are seeking an early termination of their lease to pursue other interests.

Restored Temple Theatre in Saginaw MI Reopens
SAGINAW, MI — Completing its $7 million restoration, the Temple Theatre in downtown Saginaw has reopened, according to an article in the Saginaw News. The theater will hold its first events this coming weekend, with a fundraiser planned for Friday evening and a stage show planned for Saturday.

In May 1966, a lady theater proprietor named, we think, Mrs. Glasgow, purchased three of our family portraits from our family home in Scotland which we were forced to sell to pay death duties. She said she was going to put them in her theater in, we think, California. Somehow, by 1980, they were stored in someone’s garage.

Horror Film Shot at Now-Demolished Ft. Wayne Cinema
FT. WAYNE, IN — According to the Journal Gazette, local filmmakers Richard Yates and Rodney Pasko shot a horror film last year at the now-razed Holiday 1 & 2 movie theater at the Northcrest Shopping Plaza in Ft. Wayne.
