Movie theatres with one screen would the idea thing. But that will never happen.Lets cram all we can for a quick two week run then send it down to Theatre 14 in a 20 plex.Glad I am out of the business!
There were alot nights i didn’t want to there especially with a hangover, but it never entered my mind to cancel a show because of “projector Problems”.Now if the folks came in and saw 800 empty seats and wanted a pass I certainly wouldn’t have talked them out of it. But,really all this is moot becuase there aren’t that many single screen theatres anymore. If this happened while it was a single screen and not a triple. If it was a triple I don’t see what it would matter because surely someone would be in the other theatres,So I guess it happen before the MAC was tripled.I was luckly to have worked when Union Projectionists ran the movies.I know i met several men always put on a “good show” like Buddy.
Very good points,MariettaFilmfanatic. I am not from Atlanta, but always heard Cobb County was one of the better counties in metro Atlanta. What happened to the Delk 10 is commom place in an industry that puts money way above giving moviegoers a good show, You could have a staff,Find it hard to believe the whole staff did not show up,more likely the theatre chain told the manager, the poor manager to all those tasks.I saw it coming when I was At GCC.My last year there they were talking about the managers cutting off the projectors after our highly trained UNION projectionists would start the last show.I was dead set against that and luckly that never happened in Augusta.Good parts of Town become rotten,Case in point,South Augusta.GCC puts a triple in the mall and because of high crime rate in that section of town people with money quit going to Regency Mall.GCC built a 8-plex outside the mall,It might have stayed open 10-15 years.I am amazed that today even in the good parts of Augusta area theatres have to pay cops to keep order.I my day I Threw them out, never heard of hiring cops.Glad i got out in 1983.
I don’t remember the trailers being in Sensurround we were running them i am pretty sure way before Universal had the speakers put in.They hired the doormen to unload and position the speakers in the Imperial.Universal told our theatre chain ABC THEATRES they would pay us $15.00 an hour good money now,Great money in 1974.We never saw a cent! You could be right because i sure have been proven wrong before on CT.
Good luck trying to get old theatre employees to talk.this from a guy who just had nice theatre reunion back in the fall of 2009.Told old stories for hours. Then mentioned Cinema Treasures and how we could all talk about each of the theatres and here it is 2010 and not a single one has gotten on.It drives you crazy.Someone will take the time to meet at a nice steak house for a couple of hours of theatre talk and then not get on CT.I enjoy reading old theatre employees posts more than any other post on CT.Cause We lived it,not dreamed it.
The Abbott theatre had Smoke and Water damage following a fire that destroyed two neighboring Buildings.A community group thatre abandoned the Abbott in 1991.The theatre had served the town for a quarter of a century.Due to maintenance and Structural problems the Abbott was condemned.
Charlotte let several theatres fall to highrises and having an “Uptown” as they call it.

That vintage photo,if those were one sheets out front of the Alamo Theatre just think what they would worth today.

It also mentioned she took a trip to Europe, but even in those days$500.00 would not go far,so she must either saved or borrowed the extra funds.
