  • <p>Forum Theatre 755 George Street, Sydney, NSW - Previously known as The Lyric.</p> <h1>Photo Paul Brennan - Looking down at the proscenium from the gods.</h1> <p>Located in Sydney city centre on George Street, between Valentine Street and Ultimo Road. The Lyric Theatre was opened by Canadian born J.D. Williams on 31st March 1911. The rather plain auditorium had decoration mainly on the front of the two circles. Seating provided for 865 in the stalls, 400 in the dress circle and 650 in the gallery.</p> <h1>It was one of the tallest theatres in Sydney but Greater Union, who soon took over operations, were to wish it was one of the widest.</h1> <p>When it was equipped for sound films, the acoustics were improved by adding panels of softwood lattice to the side-walls. The old fashioned decor was later replaced with sharply angled Art Deco style and the proscenium simplified.   • <h1>3D Presentation - Wings of the Hawk is a 1953 3-D American Western film directed by Budd Boetticher and starring Van Heflin and Julie Adams. It is set during the Mexican Revolution</h1> <p>From Kino Lorber & The 3D Film Archive: WINGS OF THE HAWK (1953) is the second 3D film produced at Universal Pictures. A wonderful bonus with this film is HYPNOTIC HICK, the Woody Woodpecker cartoon produced in 3D which was shown with it in theaters. The 3D for this film was designed by William Garity. It was a really ingenious process used to wonderful effect in the cartoon.</p> <h1>WINGS OF THE HAWK was the first film to be the first film composed for 1.85:1 widescreen. I don’t know about you but for me one of the most exciting aspects of 3D films is the wonderful depth. Another is the very real sense of gravity, texture and weight (especially the emotional weight) 3D film making brings with it.</h1> <p>Budd Boetticher was a great director of westerns. He really loved all that outdoor space. That shows in WINGS OF THE HAWK. Both commentaries are excellent. They really contribute to my understanding of what was at work in the making of these pictures.
