Metropole Cinema from inside

The largest and newest of Birkirkara'a cinemas, the Metropole Theatre was opened in 1954. It was the only cinema in town which had a panoramic screen and a sliding roof. The Metropole Cinema closed in 1979.

It is now a plumbing and electrical warehouse, having been totally gutted inside for this use. More details and photographs can be seen on a tribute website attached to this page.

When I was a kid, I used to watch movies in this cinema. I remember that it was the only cinema in Malta with a sliding roof. I am trying to find articles about the history of cinema in Malta. There were other cinemas in Birkirkara. I remember the Prince (Valley Rd) and the Ritz (John Borg Str)
