While eightplexes were the norm for new builds at the time, Wometco upped the ante with 12 screens at Shadowood Square which opened on November 20, 1987. Along with mainstream first-run fare, the Shadowood 12 made an early commitment to alternative/international releases, which continues to this day. When first opened, each auditorium was not only numbered but named after one of Wometco’s past theatres. Two larger 200-seat auditoriums included 70MM capabilities.
Cobb Theatres inherited the Shadowood 12 after acquiring Wometco’s remaining facilities in 1994, constructing four more small screens on June 21, 1996. Later, Regal took ownership. It was closed on February 12, 2023. It was reopened by VIP Cinemas on March 15, 2024. It closed on August 24, 2025.

WEST BOCA RATON, FL — The curtain is coming down for the VIP Shadowood 16 movie theater in West Boca Raton next week.
The cinema’s last day of operation will be August 24, 2025, according to a recent social media post by the theater.
In August 2023, South Carolina-based real estate developer EDENS purchased the Shadowood Square shopping center located at State Road 7 and Glades Road.
The developer has said it plans to demolish the theater and three other buildings on the property and add six new buildings.
The new plaza will include 50,000 square feet of space featuring restaurants, retail stores, and a car wash.
Originally opened by the Wometco chain in 1987, the theater later became part of the Regal Cinemas chain until 2024, when VIP Cinemas took over.
VIP Shadowood 16 billed itself as part of a family-owned and operated cinema chain dedicated to bringing affordable movies in a clean, family-friendly environment.
Guests with the annual VIP Bucket will receive free refills through the final day of operation.
All 2025 VIP Bucket holders and their parties will also be able to receive $5 discounted admission to any regularly scheduled show.
Guests with an unused balance on gift cards purchased at VIP Shadowood 16 will be refunded upon request after the closing date.
To receive a refund, email with the full gift card number, name, and mailing address where a refund check can be mailed for the remaining balance.
