The Cinemark Century 16 theater on Shoreline Boulevard in Mountain View is slated to close next week but plans are already underway for it to reopen ahead of the December holidays.

Syufy Enterprises, the company that originally built the cineplex and continues to own the site, plans to rebrand the theater as Mountain View Cinema 16 and get it back up and running again before Christmas, according to Tony Maniscalco, Syufy’s vice president of marketing.

“It’s all happening very fast,” Maniscalco told the Voice. “Basically, we’re taking it back after 20 years.”

The cineplex opened in the mid-1980s and originally operated as a Century movie theater, according to Maniscalco. Cinemark then took over in 2006. Cinemark’s lease agreement with Syufy is expiring at the end of the month, he said.

Moviegoers will see some changes when the theater reopens but Maniscalco was tightlipped about the specifics.

“I can’t say what they are yet,” he said.

For over a decade, Syufy has been aiming to build more than just a movie theater at 1500 N. Shoreline Blvd. Dubbed the Shoreline Gateway project, the developer’s most recent plans show a cluster of eight residential buildings wrapped around a park. The buildings range from nine- to 15-stories, according to a city of Mountain View update. The project would also include retail, restaurants and a fitness center, as well as new streets and a publicly accessible open space area.

Asked how the theater would fit into the proposed development, Masiscalco said he did not immediately have that information.

More details about the theater’s reopening timeline and future plans will be announced in October, according to a Syufy press release.

Each AXV auditorium will have a larger screen lit by a Barco 4K laser projector, which delivers crisp, brilliant images with vivid color, deep blacks and razor-sharp detail from edge to edge. The picture is matched by Barco AuroMax immersive sound, which uses more than 30 speakers placed throughout the auditorium, including overhead, to deliver sound from all around the audience. From pulse-pounding action to quiet, breathtaking moments, AXV puts moviegoers in the center of the story. Every existing seat in the theater is being removed and replaced with all-new luxury seating with personal tray tables.

“We’re not just refreshing the auditoriums. We’re taking out every single seat and starting over,” Crane said. “Every guest, in every auditorium, will sit in a brand-new luxury seat with a personal tray table, so they can settle in, spread out and enjoy their food and drinks during the movie. It’s the most visible way we can show this community how committed we are to their experience.” The upgraded concession menu includes real butter, Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn, Nathan’s Famous hot dogs and hand-scooped ice cream, along with classic movie snacks and beverages.
