Centre / Mall Theatre May 1955

The Mall Theatre first opened as the Centre Theatre around 1939. It originally had 607 seats upon opening. 20th Century Theatres ran the Centre in later years. Around 1969, the Centre Theatre was renamed as the Mall Theatre and the number of seats were reduced to 500. Famous Players took over management of the Mall Theatre in the early-1980’s.

The Mall Theatre closed around 1985 and was subsequently demolished. The theatre site remains vacant as of 2012, and is in use as a parking lot.

A 1982 photo of the Mall Theatre can be seen here. The marquee design resembles that of the Avon Theatre in Hamilton.

Thanks, SC. That’s the sign I remembered. I don’t know if I took photos when I was in London. And it was probably more than 10 years ago…

The Mall Theatre actually closed in 1987, not 1985. I remember it well as one of the last movies it showed was Nightmare On Elm Street 3 Dream Warriors in Winter of 1987. After sitting empty for a bit it was converted into an Arcade / Pool Hall known as Ace Arcade. They left the “A” from MALL on the Marquee. It subsequently closed around 2006 and the building has since been demolished and is an empty parking lot.
