Roxy Cinema

Located in Blyth, Northumberland. The Roxy Cinema was built on the site of the Hippodrome Cinema which closed in 1940, and was demolished in 1948. It was built for Sol Sheckman’s Newcastle upon Tyne based Essoldo circuit, and opened on 5th September 1955. Like its predecessor, it had a ballroom attached.

The Roxy Cinema was closed on 15th November 1964, and was converted into an Essoldo Bingo Club, which continues today as a Mecca Bingo Club.

I have added a photograph of the interior of the former Roxy, which I visited today. It has been restructured with a drop ceiling. Nothing visible remains to indicate the building’s former use.
