Tri-City Twin Drive-In

Opened on August 3, 1966 on screen 1 with Dean Martin in “The Silencers” and Marlon Brando in “The Chase” and screen 2 with Carl Reiner in “The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming” and Jack Lemmon in “How to Murder Your Wife”. It was built to replace the Menands Drive-In, located across the street (which was demolished to become a Two Guys Dept. Store and an Albany Public Supermarket). The Drive-In had a giant pylon sign on Broadway, and a long entry road led to a box office. The concession stand had a second floor projection booth, and the one building served both screens. There was also a playground until a few years before it closed. UA operated the Tri-City Twin drive-in the longest. Closed in 1990.

Demolished(date unknown?). The site is now Fed-Ex Shipping Depot, and Fleet Pride Shipping Depot.

The western section of the drive-in is an open field. You can just see the hints of ramps and the general shape is still present.

Boxoffice, April 20, 1970: “Fabian Theatres notified exchanges and service people the circuit would assume operation of Tri-City Twin Drive-Ins, Albany-Troy Road, effective Wednesday (1), it was reported. Esquire Theatres of Boston had conducted the local exchange’s first outdoor dualer since its opening in August 1966 … Tri-Cities has been a year-round movie spot - weekends only during the winter.”

An item saying that frigid weather had delayed construction on the twin drive-ins being built by Esquire Theatres of America at Menands, New York, appeared in The February 6, 1966 issue of Boxoffice. Construction was slated to resume in May. The project was to include a small conventional theater on the same site, but I haven’t been able to discover if this was actually built or not.
