Good plan, especially with one of the grandest movie palaces of them all sitting vacant and gutted all of these years after a terribly failed experiment.

In this particular case 40th & Girard isn’t the most affulent communities in Philadelphia. But hey, you wish to make a go of it.

Good luck to you.

m00se1111, this theater was not listed as demolished before I added my comment, and the opening paragraph as you described was updated by Howard after I commented on it. I think it’s a little weird that you are “well actuallying” all of my comments on Philadelphia theaters recently lol. Here is what it looked like before: https://web.archive.org/web/20230925041718/https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/65399

I’m working on a project to get all cinema palaces in the Philadelphia area categorized, updated and hopefully more of them preserved, so they can avoid being demolished like the Ritz!

well yes, 2021-2024 is the early 2020’s as noted in the opening paragraph. Thank you for your clarification.

Sad to report that this appears to have been demolished sometime between 2021-2024 based on Google Street View :( https://tinyurl.com/ckyj5c4e

The Parkway Theatre was listed at 40th and Poplar Street in the 1914-1915 American Motion Picture Directory.

Judging from the old signage, Barb’s Beauty Salon, Bob’s Deli, and the coin operated laundromat were all in operation at the same time. Very convenient. The ladies could get their hair done while their laundry was washing, then pick up some cold cuts and a pickle for lunch on their way out.
