The new-build Dunlap’s New Theatre opened on April 16, 1924 with “Boys of Mine.” E.T. Dunlap sold the venue to Harry Pace and Jack Bouma in May of 1928. They changed the name to the Tivoli Theatre and would soon install sound. Herbert Bluechel of Omaha took it over in 1931. Familiar names Mr, and Mrs. Harry Lankhorst took over the venue in August of 1939.
Lankhorst Theatres Circuit changed its name to the Sioux Theatre (#1) on September 17, 1939 with “Andy Hardy Gets Spring Fever.” On November 10, 1961, they moved other the Comet Theatre building for the New Sioux Theater’s (#2) reboot with “Tammy Tell Me True.” This building was converted to retail for a pharmacy.
Would suggest renaming entry as Sioux Theatre #1.
I’ve added the Sanborn view. Note that the historical address was 207 Kansas (Ave?). At this point, they seem to be treating 209 (which today is 811, and part of the same facade) as a separate building. It’s possible it was remodeled while Mr. Dunlap was still involved.
This site has a long history, involving at least one other theater. The building is in decent shape today, and 809 is a screen printing place. I didn’t get a picture, and I’ll likely never be out that way again. The 1926 Sanborn shows the building shaped differently, but given that the name on the front is Dunlap, the current facade must date to 1924. It seems the retail space at 811 was extended later.
