Trent Cinemas 7

The Trent Cinemas 7 is a very short-lived movie house in Peterborough, only operating for more than a year. Following the 1995 closure of the Trent Cinemas (former Odeon Theatre) downtown, its president, Norman Stern, remarked that the city was “saturated for” movies and that there were “simply too many screens in town right now.” The chain immediately launched the 7-plex on December 19, 1997.

The Trent Cinemas 7 had a short life and its corporations involved had other plans. He was subsumed into the then-newly-formed Galaxy Cinemas chain. Ellis Jacob and Steve Brown, backed by Canadian financing from Onex Corporation, their goal was to build multiplexes in mid-sized cities, and Peterborough would be among the first.

By April 1999 Galaxy had announced plans to replace the Trent Cinemas with a dramatically altered theatre complex. The Trent Cinemas 7 closed for the final time after more than a year of operation on June 17, 1999. The building was completely demolished and rebuilt as the Galaxy Cinemas Peterborough (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures), which launched in July 2000. Galaxy also owned the Lansdowne Cineplex at the time, which remained open until August 2001.
