Art+ Cinema

In the centre of Budapest, at the junction of Erzsébet körút and Dob utca, on the site of the Astor Café, the Royal Nagymozgó (literally “Royal High-Moving”, perhaps indicating a “movie palace”), operated by József Radó, opened in 1912. The building had been constructed in 1889.

In 1925 it became the Vesta Cinema, from 1942 it was the Erzsébet (“Elizabeth”) Cinema, and from 1945 it regained the name Vesta. After nationalisation, in 1951, it was renamed the Pentele Cinema then, in 1954, it became the Mátra Cinema.

The first major renovation took place in 1958; the next in 1983. In 1984, it became the Mátra Fairy Tale and Youth Cinema and, from 3 October 1991, it was renamed the Örökmozgó (“Perpetual Motion”) Cinema.

Since 1 October 2015 it has been operating as the Art+ Cinema, with two screens. The main screen, with 126 seats, is named “Béla Lugosi”, after the Hungarian actor who famously portrayed Count Dracula, while the smaller screen, with 30 seats, was named “Mihály Kertész” in honour of the famed Hungarian director, who is better known as the Anglicised Michael Curtiz. That screen was later renamed after film director Miklos Jansco.

This art-house cinema is operated by Vertigo Média.

A correction: Although the smaller screen was, at one time (according to internet sources), named in honour of director Mihály Kertész (“Michael Curtiz”), by the time of my visit, as can be seen from my photos, it had been renamed in celebration of Hungarian writer/director Miklos Jansco.
