Theater

This early theater appears on the March 1917 Sanborn. It was located in a deep and narrow single story brick building, typical for the era. This may have been built as a theater, since it replaced an older two story wooden building that was a restaurant on the 1911 map.

Howard is not listed in the 1914-15 AMPD and the only theater listed in 1926 has a capacity of 400, so this was likely closed after a few years. The building was demolished years ago. It appears to be missing in 1984 photos, and this corner has since been redeveloped into a hotel.

This is known as the Grand Theatre. It was managed by William Klein during the early-1930s.

I doubt it. 400 seems like far too many people to fit in a small space like this. I suspect the Grand was an old opera house on Farmer west of Main. That still existed in 1984, but was lost to the shriveling up of downtown since.
