The Rex Theatre had been set to open on New Year’s Day, 1912, according to an item in the January 6 issue of the trade journal “Moving Picture News.” The Rex Theatre was owned by Bert Lustig, owner of the National Theatre (later to be the Regent) nearby.

The trade journal described the Rex as “…one of the prettiest and most up-to-date houses in the city….” but despite its charms, the operation did not prove a long term success. The Rex Theatre was listed in city directories for 1913 and 1914, but in 1915 the address had become the location of only a confectioner’s shop.

The entire block, which once included such landmarks as the Hippodrome Theatre and the Westminster Hotel, was long ago cleared and has since been redeveloped.
