Elizabeth Picture Theatre

Located in the city centre, this Classical style building was built in 1879 to the plans of Brisbane based architect Richard Gailey. Originally housing retail, in 1927 it was given an internal remodel and in 1928 it was taken over by the Queensland Irish Association to be used as a social club and meeting place. On 28th June 1948 the building was named Tara House and the facade was given Listed Building status. The Queensland Irish Association had moved out by May 2016 and the building was ‘For Lease’.

It was taken over by the Five Star Cinemas chain and converted into a 4-screen cinema, which opened as the Elizabeth Picture Theatre in 2018.
