The Hakodate Nikkatsu Theater opened its doors as a single-screener on January 25, 1955, and its name was shorten to just Hakodate Theater on March 19, 1957 after being taken over by Sugai Kogyo.
After a four-month renovation that began in August 1984, it was twinned on December 8, 1984 as the Hakodate Movie & Grand Theaters, housing 216 seats in each auditorium which is the total of 432 seats. Its name was then shorten to just Hakodate Theaters 1 & 2. Both theaters are foreign affiliates of Marunouchi Piccadilly and Marunouchi Louvre, but Toho foreign films are also occasionally screened.
Unfortunately it was closed on March 21, 2004 because of the theater failing to compete against the nearby Hakodate Cinema Daimon. It was demolished afterward to make way for a parking lot.
In 2006, two years after its closure, Sugai Entertainment announced the construction of an amusement facility, including a movie theater on the site of the former Hakodate Bus Showa Office in Mihara with a planned opening in July of the following year, but the construction was scrapped because of various circumstances. The site was later occupied by stores such as K’s Denki among others.
The company later changed its name to SD Entertainment, but its theater business was transferred to Sugai Dinos, which was established through a corporate split in 2018. However, due to Sugai Dinos' civil rehabilitation proceedings, the movie theater business was re-transferred to Dinos Cinema, established by GENDA GiGO Entertainment, in October 2022.
