Regent Theater

This theater first appears on the 1917 Sanborn. It was located in an old two story brick storefront, built sometime between 1884 and 1890. The 1912 map shows a pool hall there. This must have started under a different name, but had become the Regent Theatre by 1926. It was still open in 1933, but is listed as closed in 1935. It apparently never reopened, but is still listed as closed in 1946.

The building today is in terrible shape. The brickwork and colorful tiles have recently been painted in a garish scheme, which appears to be the only maintenance the building has received in decades. It is used as a furniture store.

The Regent is mentioned in the June 16, 1923 issue of Exhibitors Trade Review which said the house had just been purchased by Messrs. F. W. Meade, Jr. and Sr., who had also acquired the Cozy and Elite Theatres of Pratt, Kansas.

The October 30, 1926 issue ofMoving Picture World said that the Regent Theatre at Eureka, Kansas was being remodeled.

I think the older Regent listing is in error. This is apparently still shown as a theater on the 1947 Sanborn, which I do not have access to. The other possibility is that this theater was somehow never listed. The KHRI entry for this building has several historic photos, but you can’t make out a name in any of them. The elaborate cornice on top was removed by about 1950.
