The Sleepy Eye Opera House is a historic second-floor venue built in 1895 that hosted community gatherings, traveling plays, dances, and popular silent movies, as well as one very special event.
On October 18, 1922, after playing an exhibition baseball game at the local Sleepy Eye Ballpark, Major League Baseball legends Babe Ruth and Bob Meusel attended an evening banquet and were honored guests at a dance held inside the Sleepy Eye Opera House. Legend holds that Ruth signed his name somewhere backstage during this visit.
The theater is still listed in the 1929 Yearbook, but does not appear in the 1930 edition. As of the mid-2020s, the old Sleepy Eye Opera House has become a popular haunted house attraction, with many of its original equipment and features remained intact.

The historic address was 401 Main St. 2nd Ave E used to be 4th St. I’ve corrected the address with a guess based on 144 being across the street. No numbers are visible on streetview. The ground floor is an antique store.
