Located on Grote Street opposite the Her Majesty’s Theatre, the Hippodrome was an open-air theatre which presented circus and vaudeville acts. In 1908 it was renamed Royal Pictures. In 1909, following a remodel with seats in orchestra and balcony levels, it reopened as the Empire Theatre, presenting vaudeville and films. From 1910 it became a full time cinema. It was closed in 1948, operated as an independent cinema by W. Moffat.

In 1952 it was converted into retail use as a Peoples Stores.
