Following up. The name of the venue is now Legacy Drama House. It hosts concerts, forums, stage plays and is available for rental for other functions.
The website is now - https://thelegacydramahouse.com/
If you enter 112 Webster Ave Rochester NY into GoogleMaps, it shows a rather cute little building with a canopy that says “Legacy Drama House”. The “see inside” option gives a 360 view of a gutted interior with very little original ornamentation. A functional theater for stage, it seems. If anyone can verify that this was once part of the Schine Theater chain, I’d love to learn more. ~ Karen
This theater was built too early to have DeAngelis as architect. Could this have been a Lempert project. DeAngelis did many remodel/modernization of Lempert theaters and may have been a Lempert protege.
The first ad for the Plaza Theatre is in January of 1917 which could be when it opened. It closed in 1929 without converting to sound. On November 28, 1939 as the improved Plaza Theatre relaunched with “Kentucky” and “Pride of the Navy.”
The theater was also known as the Webster Theater.
Architect was Michael DeAngelis. Seating was originally 500. Architectural style is actually Italian Renaissance. Was owned in the late ‘20s by Major L. J. Waterbury, who also owned the Staley in Rochester.
The plaza was open prior to 1925 and was no longer listed as open in 1931 but shows as open in 1935.
