Not living in Cornelia I cannot say exactly when the drive-in closed. I do remember that when the Grand first closed, the drive-in stayed open. After the Grand reopened, I don’t know if the drive-in closed or not. The last time I saw the Grand open it was playing Independence Day. (1996) I guess it closed after that because the next time I went through, it had been demolished.

I did not take any pictures of the drive-in the last time I went through Cornelia but you could see that some of the trees that surrounded it had been cut but you could still see the parking area.

Like I said, not living there, I cannot tell exactly when everything closed.

If memory serves me correctly, Bone was a name of a prominent family in the county. There were other businesses named Bone in Butler, Ga.

This and the 54 Drive-In are probably the same.

After looking at old ads for this Drive-in, I believe it was called the Forrest Park Drive-In. I am sure I saw the name 54 Drive-In. In the 1970’s someone tried to open a storefront theater in the present shopping center but only lasted a few months. I did have a posting of this but it was removed

Here is the damage to the strip center. The theater did not burn down but probably sustained smoke and water damage.

Hard to believe that “The Sound of Music” played here for almost a year during the 1960’s. “Rosemary’s Baby” played here with the requisite black baby carriage over the marque.

Here are 2 pictures of how the Lakewood Theater looks now.

Here is the Jonesboro Twin today. It seems ironic that a club would occupy the old theater when everything else in the stip center is now a church.

JFBrantley commented about AMC Southlake 24 on Jun 25, 2010 at 8:32 am

The IMAX is here but it is not true IMAX. One night I saw a movie in the adjacent auditorium and sneaked in to look at the screen. It looked no different from the previous screen. Already in the auditorium was a huge screen by today’s standards and the IMAX looked not different.

What many people are not aware of is that these theaters putting in fake IMAX screens to charge people $4.00-$7.00 surcharge to an already inflated admission price.

I am not picking on Southlake 24 but this can be said for many existing theaters such as Barret Commons 24.

I do not know if this is true about the Mall of Georgia IMAX since that was built for IMAX. I did see one IMAX movie at Fernbank and what made it special was seeing a huge screen and you being right on the screen. This is not the case at Southlake.

Again, I am not picking on Southlake but anyone thinking they are seeing something special on the IMAX screen can just go to the other three giant screens and save the IMAX price.

I remember this drive-in stayed open after the Grand closed. The last time I rode by which was about 8 years ago you could tell where the drive was. It looked like it had been closed for a while but was still standing but falling down.

I was in Little Rock once in the 1980s and saw the last Dirty Harry movie at this theater. I loved how big the screen was. One funny note was before the feature and after the previews, you saw a warning on the screen that switching auditoriums was prohibited.
Quite funny in a single screen theater.

Living in Hapeville, there was not so much variety. One of my friends and I went to see Bo Derek’s Tarzan the Ape Man at Belmont. This move came out I believe in 1982. I do not know how much longer after that before the theater closed.

The pictures look very nice. Any chance on restoring the Laurel and Hardy murals on the side.
