fortunately new owners have been able to rescue the site as a live performance venue with great sound and awesome reconstruction of the inside of the theatre and its historical elements.

for sure I am looking forward to see what they are showing in late september since at leats for the momnent it seems to be a lot of the rep screenings of stuff from theatres and not as many open vault films. Maybe some old horror films for around Halloween ;–)

Least it will do some brisk business hopefully to keep th ememory of th esite alive, but sitll wish movies would return to the area ;–(

Once the Uptown shut its doors back in 2003 this ended up becoming my most frequented theatre for the toronto film festival just to sheer volume of the great programming and the historic and prestine nature of the theatre itself. It is just absolutely gorgeous. Rivals the El Captitan in my opinion in terms of viewing experience and wish there were more opportunities to watch films here *fingers crossed.

I would love to see someone actually save and restore this theatre, it is the last one of the fest chain waiting to be rented/purchased and or restored to its former glory.

I am kind of interested to see what happens to the site since the condos are starting to go up in the area to see if the Sears store is going to remain or if at some point the lease is going to expire and if theyu are going to put something else on the site like a new AMC or Empire.

I cant believe that it has been that long already since that film has come out. It is a sure fire classic and is right up there with the first Superman film of 78, Spiderman 02 and the Dark Knight as all time genre pictures. A sure achievement in filmmaking for sure.

such a gorgeous theatre, wish I could have experienced it as a movie house, I have always been there to see various theatre shows over the years.

yeah that was the theatre formation I grew up with (was born in 1977) so I never got to see it as just the one unfortunately ;–(

lol yeah for me the process was already on the way (Runnymede only went to twice along with the Humber, and the Westwood was already a 3).

Exactly. Always had fond memories of that theatre from seeing Return of the Jedi there way back in the day ;–)

Yeah all of those locations have now reopened that we thought we had lost with the only exception being the Paradise which i hope is only a matter of tmie until it itself reopens. I have heard rumors that there has been some movement there in terms of new tenants so he is hoping. And yeah not sure if Empire quite has enough capital as of yet fro a brand new complex since it essnetially adopted all the refuse from the merger.acquisition of Famous by Cineplex, but they could make a play. And good call about the Humber btw. Would be great to see Humber reopened since the condos that it has been advertising for ages seem stalled and would be awful to see that site go to waste.

see what happens though, right now I think both chains are a little hesitant to build new facilities until after the economic crisis abates ;–(

I know it is horrible. It was great to see the Kingsway reopened for sure but 1 screen there and the 1 mutliplex defintely doesn’t cover it, and with the presentation quality of the prints starting to slide with Queensway (banged and scratched up after only playing a week) it would be great to see some other viable options pop up. Come to think of it always thought the old Westwood grounds would be a great spot for the AMC or the Skyway 6 lot.

I was totally stoked to hear about the new owners for the theatre big time~ I Have only been to Ottawa twice have managed to make it there on both occasions for Dark Knight, Burn After Readin, Silent Partner along with another Grindhouse film and was really impressed with the layout and preservation that has taken place. Great atmosphere to watch a film ;–)

It would be totally awesome if Cineplex Entertainment was able to lock up some of the land in this area to build a new complex in honor of the old Skyway 6, since it is right at the higway intersection and for all fo the traffic from the various hotels and such, or maybe if AMC makes a move…..

Has anyone seen any of the prints for the 3d films they are showing the second half of July? I was wondering what condition they were in, since Superman and Clockwork were in pretty respectable shape when I saw them here last month.

igoudge commented about Uptown Theatre on Jul 3, 2009 at 9:44 am

And as it is unfortunately even the Cumberland is on its last legs, they are apparently only renewing their lease a month at a time since the rest fo the tenants for the buillding have pretty much moved out and the rest of the chain has being gradually shutting their doors. Woudn’t be surprised within the next two years if we loose the cumberland as well unfortunately since it is the best place for foreign films in the city.

Yeah I heard that project was in the running at one point and it was shifting from the Uptown condos and the new project that is stagnated across the street but like you said, after the merger with Varsity so close along with Parascotia not far away as well it died a quick death. So miss it ;–(

Does anyone know when the construction for the Uptown condos is actually starting? They have been tryign to sell those for ages. I know the one that was over the Backstage area is well under way being 5 stories or so above street level. With how much they were dragging their feet I am sure they could have kept the venue going a lot longer ;–(
