The Magnet Theatre opened in late-1909 or early-1910. The building also contained a pool hall with two tables and a bowling alley with four lanes. By 1913 the house was operating as the Palace Theatre. A deed of sale for the property in 1918 also conveyed “390 opera chairs, an old organ, [and] a piano….” By the early-1920’s, the house had been renamed the Garden Theatre.

By 1923, a new and larger movie house called the Republic Theatre had opened nearby, and the Garden Theatre was closed and dismantled that year. Although the Republic Theatre, later called The Playhouse, was demolished in the late-20th century, the Magnet Theatre building is still standing, currently occupied by a popular restaurant called Café Normandie.
