Comet Cinema

The Comet Cinema building was on Northgate, between Thorpe Street and Henrietta Street in Hartlepool. It was constructed immediately before the outbreak of World War II in 1939. The internal decoration contract had already been awarded, but building work was stopped. It was acquired by Associated British Cinemas(ABC) in February 1942, work began to complete the building and the first films were being booked for its opening “in a few weeks time”.

But the building was requisitioned by the Ministry of Food, who left in 1949 and it was returned to the owners, Associated British Cinemas(ABC) with a possibility to be opened as the Comet Cinema. The latter could not get a licence to complete work on the cinema, and in January 1951 it was put up for sale and was never opened. It was later demolished and housing now occupies the site.

ABC already had their 1,932-seat Forum Cinema (later ABC & Fairworld Film Centre) operating in the town since 1937 (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).

In the above, it should be the COMET not Coronet cinema.

The ‘Thorpe St and Old Cemetery Road’ location was taken by me from a local history web page; and is wrong. The road running alongside the auditorium is now called Northgate. Thorpe Road is the side road at the projection room end; and Henrietta Street is the side road at the screen end.

The correct postcode is TS24 0HH. Houses 176 to 188 Northgate are on the site.
