Great Website for Historic Theater Research!
I found this site by accident while searching for general theater information. There seems to be plenty of information, though most of it is general. I spend a few hours on it a day and still haven’t gotten to the end of it.

Spectacular Hippodrome Theatre Reopens

BALTIMORE, MD — According to a report in the Baltimore Sun, the Hippodrome Theatre reopened on Tuesday, thanks to the efforts of a five-year, $62 million restoration and redevelopment project.
Closed since 1990, the theater has been restored and incorporated — along with four other historic buildings — into the massive France-Merrick Performing Arts Center. The center, designed to spark a renaissance in Baltimore’s long-dormant Westside neighborhood, seats 2,257 and will produce over 270 performances per year.
An official opening gala is planned for February 10 to celebrate the opening of the center.

Michael Delijani, who owns the two theaters as well as the State Theater nearby, did not have to pay for the relighting but was required to agree to keep the signs lit for 10 years.

Astor Plaza to Close Soon?

NEW YORK, NY — Cinema Treasures superfan William sent in this potentially tragic news about the Astor Plaza…
“Times Square will be losing another theatre later this year, when Loew’s Astor Plaza Theatre closes. Plans call for the theater to be turned into MTV studio space.
The information came from the company that has a contract for servicing of projection equipment for the Loew’s company in the city. And most of the tenants on the ground floor at the 1515 Viacom building closed and moved out as of last week. Also the Loew’s State Theatre (4plex) in the Virgin Megastore is going to be dropped too.
My office is just down the street and in the last week a lot of things have changed in that building. Because Viacom has MTV and Comedy Central, they want some more high profile studio space in Times Square."
