I don’t understand why Barbra Strisand won’t get the ball rolling on the Kings. She worked there and it shuld have a lot of memeory for her. She is doing another tour and will donate money to charity.

I wonder if we know each other? I was in AC from 67-78 fro the summers and I remember it well. The Strand was indeed the last theater to operate on the boardwalk. The Apollo’s last season of operation was 1977.Charlie Tannenbaum was a customer of mine at Atlantic Bank and he told me they auditoium was condemmed. The front part through the lobby was used the following year, but burned. Eventually a men’s clothing store opened there. The last year of operation for the Strand was 1978. After that the front was kept and used for bike rentals. The auditorium was knocked down.
Wow that was unheard of for Atlantic City having a boardwalk theater open in the winter months.
I remember an old post card that had a picture of the Virgina and one summer they played The Carpetbaggers. Does anybody know which year this was. I don’t think The Carpetbaggers was a roadshow engagement. I also seem to remember them playing It’s A MAd MAd MAd World at the Virginia.

The theater didn’t close until 1973. TSOM did move to the Shore but I am not sure if it was Aptil 66 0r 67. It was whatever year Throughly Modern Mille played at the Virginia. I was not aware that the Virginia stayed open for the winter with TSOM. Can anybody confirm this?
HAs anybody heard who is going to take over the E-Walk. I know it was one of the theaters AMC had to sell. Also, do we know if AMC is going to continue as AMC/Loews?
I never went there, but remember a friend telling me about Sweet Charity and that they had aqua curtains. I heard the curtains at the Fox went up not across

The last owner of this theater was Carmike. Why they couldn’t make a ru of it is beyond me. In the deal they got 3 theaters, Main St 5, University 6 and Hillsboro 8. The Hillsboro 8 was originally 3 scvreen theater run by Plitt. They gutted the 3 plex, knocked down the drive in behind it and reopened in the late 80’s as the Hillsboro 8. It was a beautiful theater when they opened. I rememebr one of th eopening films was Hairspray. They also were equiped to show 70mm which they did with Dick Tracy and Far And Away.
Which bankruptcy was this?

I was not aware that Those Magnificent Men played at the Trans LUx as a roadshow engagement. I remember it being there, but not that it was roadshow. If I remember back 41 years the Arcadis next door had Woody Allen’s What’s New Pussycat.

The Surf is on Collins about 73rd. The Collins Ave theater is part of the Deauville hotel on 67th and Collins. It was created for showcase singers. There opening show many years ago was Vicki Carr. The theater didn’t last very long. It is still part of the hotel and is used during conventions for meetings and other things. The Surf still has the original screen where they do show movies from time to time while memebrs work out.

I saw GWTW at the Randolph in 68 on the great cinerama screen even though it was in 70mm. I am positive I saw GWTW at the SamEric in 75 in 70mm. HOward will u verify that .

I saw Man Of La MAncha at the Boyd aka SamEric and I remember the screen being curved even tho it was ont he stage. Was this the original Cinerama screen than? Years later when I went back and saw GWTW in 70mm the screen was large, but the flat screen that remained for years.

I see you have posted on most of the AC theaters that it lists in the FDY as GG theaters. What is FDY? George Hamid leased the theaters to a company called GG and they ran them until 1973. I think the last year for the Shore was 1971.
The SHore also didn’t have 965 seats. It had a small downstairs and small balcony. I think the most it held was 300-400. Of course I am going back to 1969 when I saw Oliver there.
Hey TC. That photo does not look like the Shore. It was right off the corner. The postcard shows a different marquee that what they last had. The Shore was no place near city hall.

I posted the first comment. I just knew some right wing idot (gee is this Bush posting something under a false name he lies about everything else)would start up on the gay issue. Nobody pushed Brokeback down your throat or anybody elses. I think the acadamy showed they are not hoomophobic or prejudice by awarding both films.
All rights groups like the Christian, ACLU groups all fight towrd getting people to accept what they believe. People should accept what they want.
Crash was not a big surprise or was it the biggest upset in Acadamy history. For once the acadamy voted Best Picture to a film that truly deserved it. I am a gay man and from the day the nomintaions came out I said Crash was the best film I had seen last year. Had I been an acadamy voter, I would have voted the way all the awards went last night except for Best Supporting Actress. I felt Catherine Keener was much better than Rachel Weiz.

There is a hotel currently on the site of the former Apollo theater.
So have they switched from porno films?

I worked at the Festival from 80-82 fro Joe Torres. There was no marquee. We had a sign in the upstairs window that said Festival Theater.
The Frank family have always been jerks even back in the 70’s.

The Bay Harbor theater isn’t around anymore.

The Chicago theater was also a Plitt theater. I rememebr seeing old pictures and at the top of the vertical Chicago sign was Plitt

The Shore was very plain, it had no masking or curtains.
