Mystic Theatre

This theater appears on the 1913 Sanborn. It was located in a large two-story brick building which also contained a hotel and restaurant. The building, located just across N. Locust Street from the Santa Fe depot, was constructed sometime after 1905, replacing some tents and a shack which served as lunch-rooms.

This theater was still operating in 1914-15, when it was listed in the AMPD. It appears to have closed by 1926.

Pittsburg’s downtown has shrunk considerably. This building, along with at least one other, was demolished long ago, and the site is now a parking lot.

There was trouble in Pittsburg in 1916, as noted in the July 1 issue of Motography: “Manager O. A. Bandy, of the Mystic Theater at Pittsburg, Kansas, has been charged by the Kansas censors with exhibiting immoral shows. A test case has been set down for trial.”

Maybe 1916 was the closing date, if he lost.
