My research shows “Mutiny on the Bounty” opening at the Blue Mouse the week of December 19-25,1962 and “Barabbas” opening the same week at the 5th Avenue.

I too only went there once, in 1976. There was a double-bill of UA films playing…“Drum” and “Breakheart Pass.” I only stayed to see Charles Bronson in “Breakheart Pass” since “Drum” was supposed to be one of the worst films of 1976.

This map is just a little bit off. The red marker is actually marking the location of the Brightwood Christian Church. It should be across Route 88 (Library Road)at the bottom of Lytle Road.

I only got to see a movie at this theater once. I went on a date with Nancey Epperson to see “A Brief Vacation,” an Italian film directed by Vittorio de Sica, starring Florinda Bolkan. It was rare that sub-titled foreign language films played in neighborhoods like this one as a second-run.

Good Luck on your restoration! I only got to go to the Parkway once,but I can still remember it. I got there early for the feature and I have a picture in my mind of a long hallway to get to the men’s room, which I needed to use badly after the bus ride and walk to get there. Oh, by the way…the movie was great…it was “The Wind and the Lion” with Sean Connery and Candice Bergen.

The former Greater Pittsburgh International Airport had a movie theater inside it back in the 1960s for people who had time to kill between flights or just coming from the residential areas around it. It finally gave way to expansion by USAir.

Thanks for the info – what I’ve been doing is copying entire lists of films (not just single titles) from Excel and pasting them in.

I have not been counting “invitation-only charity premieres” such as those held for roadshow films, but the week that the regular paying-public got to get into the theater…I found a lot of these were on Tuesday evenings, which is why some of my dates are a week later…and yes, I used Variety a lot, but I would subtract 6 days from the date on the city report.

The reason that “Lawrence of Arabia” only played for 3 weeks at the Nixon Theater in Pittsburgh, PA is that the theater caught on fire and was heavily damaged. “L o A” opened on April 3, 1963 and the film was transferred to the Fulton Theater for the rest of its premiere run, but it didn’t do as well there and only lasted until “Bye Bye Birdie” replaced it on June 19, 1963.

Thanks so very much for catching that, Coate – I put my info in Excel spreadsheets and didn’t catch the word “Rivoli” for the “Jaws” row because it was behind “Loew’s Orpheum” alphabetically. It opened in most cities on Wednesday, June 18, 1975. I actually wondered about that when I sorted the spreadsheet – didn’t think “The Return of the Pink Panther” played that long.

Re: Your other concerns. As I’ve already typed all this data in Excel, I don’t have time to retype everything, so I just copy and paste, which probably is what makes it one paragraph. Any suggestions to improve the format are welcome – I’m just trying to get my data on here for others to save them all the years of microfilm reading I’ve done.

As far using Wednesday dates, I grew up and live in Pittsburgh, and our theaters changed bills on that day up to around October 1974, when they began trying Fridays. Going through old newspapers on microfilms, it would take forever to look at every single day to see what new openings there were. In addition, Variety used Wednesdays for their weekly box-office reports so I choose to do so, also. The date I use is just considered by me to be the first day of the opening week, although many cities opened new films on Wednesdays beside Pittsburgh.

Finally, I think that anyone who might be interested in Cinema Treasures is pretty much already aware of the titles that were “roadshow presentations” and there are other websites that list 70 mm or other large size film, so that info is already available elsewhere…I was just interested in what theaters played what films when compared to here, regardless of process or type of booking.

The dates given are the Wednesday for the week that the film opened, even if it didn’t start until Thursday or Friday – Variety issues are dated Wednesdays and in those days, most (but not all) films started then. Ed Blank’s extensive and wonderful article, “What Happened to All the Old Theaters?” was in the Sunday, July 10, 1983 issue of The Pittsburgh Press. I still have the paper, although it is getting rather ragged 30 years later! But that is the date for those who have access to microfilms or if that day’s paper is available on Google News Archives.

Thanks to sconnell1 for correcting my entry – “Key Witness” indeed played at the Loew’s Capitol. My research has it during the week of 10/12/60 which also had a stage show. The reason I use Wednesday dates is because MOST movies did open that day of the week back then (although not all) and when going through old microfilms it would take forever to look at every single day. In addition, VARIETY came out on Wednesdays and is an invaluable source for finding out first-run movie openings in its box-office pages. I do plan at some point to put in the films of the Dupont, MacArthur, and other great DC theaters. Stay posted.

Cinemette as a theater chain did not start until the 1970s. Before that, the area had Associated Theaters, owned by the Stern family, and Stanley-Warner Theaters. I don’t know which one this drive-in belonged to, or if it was an independent.
