The first multiplex that opened under the Loews brand when they decided to drop the Sony nameplate was the Loews New Brunswick 18 in New Brunswick NJ in November 1996, the Sony Theatres name switch was announced in April 1994 so it lasted approximately two and a half years. I wonder what the cost was to change all the signage from Loews to Sony, then back from Sony to Loews cost? Also AMC never had much of a presence here in the five boroughs so the Loews name definitely had more recognition in NYC.

Papa did demolish the Tuxedo Theatre on Ocean Parkway to build part of his Trump Village though.

Is the general movie going public that really that uninformed to think that this is the exact same type of IMAX venue as Lincoln Square, I guess so because LieMax & Imin will now be expanding to 175 AMC locations.

Thanks for the correct opening year Orlando.

If you’re going to be putting on a pair of goggles to give you virtual reality Imax, then what is the point of going to the cinema in the first place? People can just stay on the sofa at home and do it.

Always thought the concession stand here was much nicer than the one on 34th Street, I have pictures I took during the Loews era I will have to find and post here.

Is this the last cinema still in operation in the greater NY area that still had it original Cineplex Odeon signage still intact? There are none left in the boroughs.

This is named after his father Fred, not the Donald.

The marquee in the front that says Cinema, the sale sign used to be over it. Not sure if it is closed, will check it out next time I am near the place.

Status should now be listed as demolished, as that section of the shopping center has been torn down to make way for a new apartment complex.

Yes, it looks like a truck brushed up against it and shredded it. I hope it will be repaired, but somehow doubt it.

Well at least we can take some comfort in knowing the Jersey & Paradise still have their original neon Loew’s signage intact. I wonder if they will keep the auditorium names here? I sure hope that they will.

Regal recliners do seem a bit more comfy than the AMC version, based upon my experience at Regal New Roc City.

I would suspect so, I wonder what they will replace it with? A AMC vertical sign perhaps.

They did make them more plain unfortunately as time went on. My favorite was the Loew’s Sunburst design & RKO Zig-Zag style. I only shudder to think what we will be left with once they finish the AMC signage swap out project. Because of the whole Loews-Sony-Loews name swap in the nineties there was very little Original Loew’s lettering left anywhere.

BenPaz, It was announced last week by AMC Theatres, here is the link to the Press Release:

And so the once great Loews name, one of the the greatest circuits in exhibition history will now be just a thing of the past joining other once mighty chains like RKO, Paramount, Fox, Warner Brothers & Famous Players up in Canada.

theatrefan commented about De-Luxe Theatre on Mar 7, 2017 at 9:11 am

The description should be changed to closing in the mid-1990’s not mid-1980’s. I distinctly remember seeing an article on the closing in our local paper (The Bay News) circa 94/95 about it’s shut down. Also there was a NYC law passed in 1995 that prohibited adult businesses operating within 500 feet of a school and since PS 200 was located about a block away the writing was on the wall for the De-Luxe Theatre.

Comfortably Cool, yes I checked the finding aid for the Loew’s Collection and found nothing on the Alpine unfortunately, no Loew’s Bay Ridge as well & only one photo of the Loew’s Oriental, I wonder if that was the same one I saw in one of the Marquee’s I have on Loew’s Theatres Inc. I also wanted to thank you for posting all those great vintage ads and photo’s I appreciate it.
