Thank you, thank you, thank you! Hate when people used this site for name calling etc. It’s about the theatres!

Unfortunately can’t read the Tribune article here in Canada. Restricted to U.S. readers only.

Now the ONLY theatre in downtown Kingston! Since Empire abandoned that lovely Capitol 7 and fled to the northern suburbs, but now won’t even be an Empire anymore.

Who says we didn’t understand it David? I just said I preferred the AMCs to others. Nothing to not understand about it…

Jason, do you think that Rainbow / Magic Lantern could make a go of it? They recently took over another Empire reject, the Elgin Mills in Richmond Hill, opening in November.

Jason do you think that Rainbow / Magic Lantern could make this work? They’ve recently taken over another Empire reject, the Elgin Mills in Richmond Hill, re-opening in November.

The map view is wrong on this cinema. It was at the Sheridan Mall on Erin Mills Pkwy, just north of the QEW

Good news! The Elgin Mills cinemas are re-opening in November as the Rainbow Elgin Mills. It’s already on their web site. Too bad this didn’t happen with the Sheppard Centre cinemas or the Kennedy Commons. Oh well, great news for Richmond Hill residents.

The movie going business is very strange indeed. Here in Toronto, Cineplex moved in to the former Empire Empress walk and closed their perfectly lovely Sheppard Centre. With the thousands of condos under construction right in that area, you would think it could support a theatre with more than 10 screens!

Interesting Jason that the Odeon is still going strong across the corner, yet this one doesn’t. Very strange indeed.

What a shame. Still looks like a viable theatre, interesting architecture according to all the photos on Cinema Tour. This will leave downtown Victoria with only one major theatre complex, the Odeon. Does every cinema nowadays HAVE to have stadium seating?

telliott commented about Empire Theatres Rideau Centre on Oct 7, 2013 at 12:12 pm

It was originally a Famous Players theatre upon opening. Like David said, Empire took it over after Cineplex bought FP and had to divest certain theatres. What I’ve always wondered is WHY did Empire get both this and World Exchange? Shouldn’t one have been kept by Cineplex to avoid being a monopoly downtown? Wasn’t that the point of Cineplex having to sell off competing locations?

David this closed in March.

A city like Philadelphia can’t restore the Boyd? Disgusting. Howard’s right, once it’s gone, it’s gone.

rivest266, do you have an email address where we can reach you? I’ve sent corrections over the years regarding theatres in the Toronto area on your movie-theatre.org web site and they are never corrected or never hear back from you. I’ve sent them to the email address on the web site.

Loved this theatre. It was one of a number of “sixplexes” FP opened around the same time including the Oakville Town Cenre, Gateway Six and Victoria Terrace. Probably would have lasted much longer if the “stadium seating” craze hadn’t hit yet.

Well the only AMC that wasn’t sold to Cineplex or Empire was the Kennedy Commons and that was closed. The AMC Interchange is still AMC and is still open.

This theatre is now closed. The lease expired and was not included in the recent Empire Theatres sale. Would be nice if Rainbow picked it up, they haven’t opened anything in the area in years. Would be a nice compliment to their nearby Rainbow Promenade Mall location.

The dear old Westwood has finally been demolished. After sitting there empty since April of 1998. It is so strange driving by and it’s gone.

How many levels does this theatre have? How many cinemas per level? I remember the old Capitol 6 and the big one on the main floor, 2 and 3 on the next floor and 4,5 and 6 on the next level. Always thought that was a neat way of distributing all the screens throughout the building.

No actually if you look on Cineplex.com, it’s called Cineplex Cinemas Empress Walk, just as the new name of the former Colisseum Mississauga is Cineplex Cinemas Mississauga. Must be a new “brand” for them.

telliott commented about Cineplex Cinemas Courtney Park on Jun 16, 2013 at 11:12 pm

Went here today and after almost a year from when it was sold to Cineplex, it STILL has the big AMC on it like the photo above. If this was any other business like a grocery store, dept store, restaurant chain etc, it would definitely have the name of the chain on it almost immediately. Surprising that Cineplex Entertainment the dominant theatre chain in Canada has not done this with any of the AMCs they purchased last July. Enjoyed Man of Steel though.
