Idle Hour Exterior Circa 1910

The Idle Hour Theatre was a movie and vaudeville house located near the end of Acushnet Avenue. As with many of the city’s theatres during that time it opened, closed, and then reopened under new management not once but twice. It opened April 24, 1908 under the management of Anton V. Garcia. It closed May 8th 1910 and reopened January 17, 1912 under Fred Barret. It closed again October 9, 1915 and then reopened again September 4, 1916 under Joseph Tablas Jr. It closed for good October 28, 1916.

The building still exists. It is currently used as a warehouse for a food market on an adjoining block. A garage door leads out the back, so it is unlikely the stage is still there.
