The street view and address is incorrect. The address should be 45 Main Street.

This theatre closed on December 17. 1998 with “Star Trek: Insurrection” and “A Bug’s Life” being the final two movies.

Was at the Clay today expecting it to be the final show. I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to see a note in the box office saying they were pleased to NOT be closing today. There were reps from the SFFS (San Francisco Film Society) handing out leaflets and letters to the landlord in front of the theatre. There also seemed to be some news and video crews there, at least in the afternoon after the first showing. The early matinee was about 2/3 full, and audience members seemed relieved to hear of the theatre’s current status.

The Clay is charming with much character – hope something can be worked out! It does seem like multiple parties are aware of the theatre’s status, which could be beneficial in the long run.

Yes, the current Pacheco Playhouse/home of the Novato Theatre Company is the former Ignacio Cinema, located on the very end of a currently renovating shopping complex. Function of theatre should be changed to “open”/“live”.

whatever became of the Entertainment Cinemas complex that was adjacent to this theatre?

perhaps the closing had to do with the end of a monthly lease that was on an odd day?

Any press about it having closed? Comes as a surprise after 10 years of it running fairly consistently…

The marquee has now been removed, and new renovations have started on the site.

This was a Hoyts originally; does it have an affiliation now?

jph commented about Showcase Cinemas Seekonk 11-12 on Jul 28, 2005 at 9:44 am

The 1-10 added two screens in early 1999, hence the switch here from “9-10” to “11-12”. Not sure when it was closed.

Very saddening to see the changes happen so fast.

This was an Entertainment and then Hoyts for a while…and it looks like the name was lazily changed from Hoyts to Patriot on the exterior…didn’t realize that it was Showcase before that?

jph commented about Cinema I, II and III on Jul 14, 2005 at 5:06 pm

This theatre closed in early May 1997…I think “Grosse Point Blank” and “Chasing Amy” were the other two bookings. Many good memories of films here and can still feel the spirit of the cinema in today’s Barnes and Noble. :P

The scaffolding over the theatre says that the Nokia is “coming fall 2005.” Any word on a date?

jph commented about CinemaSalem on Jun 10, 2005 at 5:00 am

Actually I remembered the exact dates — it closed as a Loews on January 31, 1995 and then reopened as a Flick on July 7, 1995. One amusing thing was that the original marquee on the side of the garage never took away the “Sack” lettering right up to 1995, they had just kept it that way until the marquee was changed to its current location.

This closed down as a Loews in December, 1994 and reopened as a Flick in July, 1995.

The arcade stayed on (although not directly affiliated with the cinema) until the East India Mall underwent extensive renovations in the late 90’s (around 1997 or so) which, among other things, gave the cinema a seperate entrance from the rest of the mall. It reverted to first run films a year or two ago.

jph commented about Embassy Performing Arts Theater on May 27, 2005 at 6:08 pm

There is a small walkway leading to the Embassy Cinema from Moody Street with an archway that says “Embassy” (across from Margerita’s restaraunt) and that may be the location of the original Embassy…?
