STATE CINEMA

Ian commented about Jacey Cinema on Oct 27, 2011 at 4:32 am

The Gap store moved in 2011 and the building has been “refurbished” and awaiting a new tenant. All traces of the interior of the cinema have been stripped with the exception of a fragment of plaster dado on a former staircase on a side wall.

I think the circle was kept as a single unit, the No 2 screen being located elsewhere (cafe perhaps?)

I think the final paragraph in the main description about being on the Buildings at Risk register needs amending.

The Picture House (Caley) is in good condition and functions as a 1,500 capacity live music venue. This is mainly standing, but the front five rows of the balcony are padded bench seating. Photos from October 2011 below.

The seating capacities are much reduced from the figures above (and I think the 1972 capacities are the wring way around – the smaller cinema was the rear stalls one). The Dominion is still going strong in 2011 as the photos below show.

Update – just discovered the location on Streetview and corrected the image. Has the stage been demolished?

Ian
Ian commented about Teatro Politeama on Oct 9, 2011 at 3:25 pm

The Politeama does not, I think, adjoin the Olympia – the former Condes is back to back with the Olympia. I have tried to correct the streetview picture above but I think that the Politeama is in the pedestrianised area and not visible on the Google site.

But it was over 20 years ago that I was last in Lisbon!

Ian commented about Cinema Olympia on Oct 9, 2011 at 3:18 pm

The Olympia was directly behind the Condes, not across the street.

Unusually permission was granted this week (during the run of a stage play (The Calendar Girls) to take some pre-show photos of the the theatre with an audience – so for a view of what it is like in full use …

I am not sure, but I think the building is still there – the redevelopment delayed.

At some point the auditorium was horizontally sub-divided with the theatre / cinema operating from the former balcony and the stage above the front stalls area as this picture shows:– AUDITORIUM I believe at this point that films were still possible using the old (the one sticking out of the façade) projection room.

The rear stalls became, I think a bar and the front stalls a cafe.

The cinema/theatre entrance at this point was around the corner in Tyldesley Road through a former balcony exit stairwell, with the bar accessed from Rigby Road. A photo from circa 1992 here:– EXTERIOR AS A CINEMA

Following a few years of closure a new restaurant is opening later in 2011, and the building is being extensively restored again. Current images here:–
