It was painful to see all the theaters in Philly AC and NYC demolished. AC slowly died once the casino’s came in. The Virginia closed at the end of 73 and didn’t reopen because the government bought the block. I never understood that because everything else stayed open for years on that block. The only thing I can think was Hamid’s lease ran out, but he also closed the Roxy too. The Apollo closed in mid August when their lease ran out with the roadshow engagement of Last Tango In Paris. It was moved to the Margate but not roadshow.
Vindanpar I am sorry I just saw your comment from January 2020. I saw Dolly originally in Philly at the Randolph when it was a roadshow engagement. The Randolph was a Cinerama theater so it had an amazing curved screen and gold curtains. The next film to play after Dolly was the than x rated I A Woman. They than got Tora Tora Tora another roadshow engagement and 6 months later it was demolished for a parking lot. So sad
When that theater was converted to a 8 plex it became history. When I originally moved to Tampa in 83 it was 3 theaters. The 92 remodel was horrible. They divided the balcony into tiny theaters that held maybe 15 people. It was a terrible experience
With digital projection can you actually see a scope film in scope? Floyd theaters wanted the screens full all the time so all screens were flat and any scope films were projected off the sides of the screen. I HATED IT
What was the issue with Sweet Charity. I have it and it is perfect it has two versions the roadshow version and regular movie version. I was very please the sound and picture were perfect on the Blu Ray
Markp Just saw your comment back to me in 2017. I was happy when they filed bankruptcy. They ruined everything they touched in NJ and Florida

What year was this? The marquee was different
It says open but the comments seem that it is closed.
Any chance of a new owner?
I was there opening day in 1987

Are they installing recliners?

Do they have the one big auditorium or did they chop it up?
So does it operate as UA or Regal ? I Know they are both Regal entertainment
Great little theater
Does anyone know why it was renamed Regal UA Midway?
I hated those strips that Rugoff Used
Did Angelika take over all City Cinema theaters?
The Virginia was the 70MM house. The Hollywood and Center also had 70MM but 99% of the 70MM films played here.

Nice to see they still use real masking side to side
Would love to see this theater open again. It was the Art house theater for the Phila area
So is this theater closed currently?
WAs this originally a General Cinema theater?
I lived in NY from 75-83 they never had any 3-d movies
If the movie industry get operational again I would love to see this reopen as a movie theater. Many happy memories there
I never liked this theater. The screens were small and for a film in scope the staff had to add the masking at the bottom of the screen.
